INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE AT UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO

Two fellowships for journalists are available at the University of Toronto (U of T) in Canada, one for Commonwealth journalists, the other for Chinese journalists. The fellowships allow journalists to spend eight months at U of T taking graduate or undergraduate courses with housing, food and academic expenses paid, as well as air fare to Toronto. Both fellowships run from 1 September 1999 to 30 April 2000.

The Gordon N. Fisher Fellowship is open to journalists employed by newspapers and news agencies in Commonwealth countries, with particular consideration given to journalists from New Commonwealth or developing countries. Candidates are selected for "professional competence and future potential as effective and responsible newspaper leaders."

The programme is run under the auspices of the Commonwealth Press Union (CPU) in tandem with the Southam Fellowship programme for Canadian journalists. Candidates must agree to refrain from professional work while they study. The deadline for applications is 16 February.

The Sing Tao Journalism Fellowship was "created to strengthen understanding as well as social, cultural and educational links between Canada and Asia." The fellowship is open to any Chinese journalist working full time at a newspaper, magazine, news service, radio or television station in Asia.

The University does not offer journalism or media studies courses, but provides the opportunity for journalists to enrich their "understanding of subject matter outside of journalism or media studies."
