The South and East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO) is calling for submissions for its 2012 Human Rights Photo Award - a part of the BETA news agency's Photograph of the Year competition. All professional photojournalists in South East and Central Europe are eligible to participate. The closing date is 22 April 2012.

The Martin Ennals Award Foundation is seeking nominations for its Human Rights Defenders Award before the deadline of 9 December. Especially sought for the award are those who are fighting for the human rights of others in courageous or innovative ways. The award honours the late Martin Ennals, the first secretary general of Amnesty International.

Human Rights Watch and World Press Photo have established an annual visual journalism award focusing on human rights - to honour the life and work of Tim Hetherington, the British photojournalist who was killed this year while covering the conflict in Libya. The deadline for the grant - worth a hefty 20,000 Euros (US$27,500) - is 15 October.

The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) is inviting nominations for the 2012 Golden Pen of Freedom Award, the annual prize which honours an individual or group for outstanding action in the cause of press freedom. Hurry: the deadline for nominations is 16 September 2011.

UNESCO is offering scholarships to attend the Windhoek +20 Pan-African Summit on Access to Information in Cape Town, South Africa, from 17 to 19 September 2011. A limited number of places are available so apply now - the closing date for scholarship applications is 3 August 2011.

Harvard Kennedy School's Center for Public Leadership is seeking out the next winner of its Gleitsman International Activist Award. Nominate individuals you believe have initiated great social change in their communities or countries. The deadline for nominations is 30 June 2011.

U.S. reporter Daniel Pearl was kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan in 2002, just four months after 11 September 2001. To honour Pearl, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists has established awards in his name that recognise excellence in cross-border investigative reporting and reporting carried out in challenging circumstances. The deadline for entries is 1 July 2011.

Want to bring international attention to 2010's Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo, or make an impact at the UN Human Rights Council? PEN American Center is seeking an experienced free expression advocate for its brand new Freedom to Write Fellowship, a full-time, 18-month position helping to expand its Freedom to Write programme.

The International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) is now accepting applications for the 2011-12 Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship, which is open to women journalists working on human rights and social justice issues. The deadline for applications is 27 May 2011.

The Institute of International Education's Scholar Rescue Fund provides fellowships for scholars whose lives and work are threatened in their home countries. "Defending the media needs media defenders." That is the mantra of the Monroe E. Price International Media Law Moot Court Competition, which is open for registration to international applicants until 12 November 2010. This year's problem bridges issues of technology, content and regulation to expose students to cutting-edge areas of media law.

The International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) is seeking nominations for its annual Courage in Journalism Awards, the only international awards that recognise the bravery of women journalists. "Nominees risk political persecution, physical injury and death in their efforts to expose corruption and champion human rights." Candidates can be full-time, part-time or freelance women journalists working in print, broadcast or online media in any country, and must be nominated by colleagues, employers, journalists or others.

The 2010 Daniel Pearl Awards competition is now accepting entries to honour cross-border investigative reporting on a topic of world significance. The Central European Initiative (CEI), in cooperation with the Vienna-based South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO), is seeking proposals for the CEI Award for Outstanding Merits in Journalism. Individuals, organisations and media companies are encouraged to nominate journalists who have completed exceptional investigative reporting in the past three years. The 5,000 EUR award also includes an expense-paid trip to the CEI Journalists Forum in Poland in September 2009.
