STATUTE USED AGAINST MATUS REPEALED
Once the bill is signed into law by Chilean President Ricardo Lagos, all cases filed under Article 6b will become void, says CPJ. This would allow exiled journalist Alejandra Matus to return to Chile without the risk of detention.
Matus faces criminal defamation charges stemming from the April 1999 publication of "The Black Book of Chilean Justice", her investigation of abuses by Chile's judiciary. However, the new law does not remove all "desacato" (insult) provisions in Chile, note PERIODISTAS and CPJ.
