Journalists in danger can find some relief from International PEN. The PEN Emergency Fund, administered by International PEN members based in Amsterdam, provides financial assistance to writers who have suffered repression as a result of their profession.
The grants, which although relatively small, help to support families left without breadwinners because of imprisonment or killing, to treat medical conditions arising from detention or ill-treatment, purchase of equipment to enable resumption of literary activities, and other areas of need.
The Fund has recently been awarded a grant from the Dutch aid charity NOVIB towards its activities, along with contributions from Dutch publishers and the international PEN membership. The PEN Emergency Fund invites applications from writers in need.
