In Jordan, 2006 saw "noticeable progress" in the press industry with the emergence of new publications and broadcasting stations, says the Arab Archives Institute (AAI) in its annual report on freedom of expression.
The new media outlets include "Fact International", a weekly that aims to provide alternative and analytical media from an Islamic and Arab perspective; Hayat FM, a private radio station for youth, children and women that focuses on Islamic issues; and Sawt Al Madina (SAM), a multipurpose channel with political and economic news.
Since liberalising the airwaves in 2002, Jordan has issued 12 radio broadcasting licences, says AAI.
