Violations by Palestinian security forces exceed those by Israeli forces in 2011, says MADA report

For the first time, violations of media freedoms in Palestine at the hands of Palestinian security services outnumbered those committed in 2011 by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF), but the IOF violations constituted a "greater threat," says the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) in its annual report.

Italian journalist kidnapped and killed in Gaza

Vittorio Arrigoni (left) Hamas officials have found the body of an Italian journalist and activist who was kidnapped last week in Gaza, report the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) and the International Press Institute (IPI). Vittorio Arrigoni was affiliated with the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), a pro-Palestinian rights group, and reported on Palestinian issues for the Italian newspaper "Il Manifesto" and online paper Peacereporter, and also wrote a blog.

Hamas shuts down journalist union

Hamas security services descended on the Gaza headquarters of the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate (PJS) and shut it down indefinitely last week, report the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA), the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). It is just the latest in a series of military attacks from all sides on the Palestinian press in the volatile region.

MADA is concerned about the deterioration in freedom of expression in the territories, in particular the safety of journalists and bloggers in response to their reporting or their writing on social networking sites.

Violations of media freedoms in the occupied Palestinian territories in 2011

MADA identified a total of 206 violations of media freedoms, with the murder of Italian journalist Vittorio Arrigoni in Gaza representing the most serious violation of the year.
