Broadcast Act amended a third time
(ANEM/IFEX) - The following is a press release of the Southeast European Network of Private Broadcasters (SEENAPB), of which ANEM is a member:
SERBIA CHANGES BROADCAST ACT FOR THE THIRD TIME
Sarajevo, July 20, 2006 - The Southeast European Network of Private Broadcasters (SEENAPB) expresses serious concern at the manner in which the Serbian Parliament yesterday urgently adopted a third set of amendments to the Broadcast Act, which concern the scope of activity of the Republican Broadcasting Agency and the manner in which its decisions are implemented.
The Serbian Broadcast Act has already been amended twice in haste, without public discussion and the consent of the broadcasting community. SEENAPB strongly opposes such practices and warns that it raises serious doubt as to the good intentions of the law-makers, especially as the Serbian Ministry of Culture did not approve of the amendments.
SEENAPB believes that the broadcast field in Serbia has to be regulated by objectively taking into consideration all parameters, decisions and regulations, based on consultations with broadcasters and the general public.
Therefore, SEENAPB supports the efforts of its member, ANEM, to secure sound conditions for the work of the electronic media in Serbia, harmonize media legislation with that of the international community, with consideration for the voice of the involved stakeholders and media organizations, as well as the general public.
Goran Gavrilov
President of SEENAPB
