(FMM/IFEX) - According to FMM, the officer-in-charge of the Aranayake Police
Station, Sub-Inspector W. Dharmaratne, who is alleged to have assaulted
journalist Pradeep Kumara Dharmaratne, has been removed from duty, pending
further inquiry. W. Dharmaratne was removed after a preliminary inquiry held
by the Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Province, on the orders of
the Inspector General of Police.





**Updates IFEX alert dated 24 February 1998**

The interdiction came in the wake of demands for proper enforcement of the
law to prevent threats and intimidation of journalists by the police and
security services, which were made following the assault on Pradeep Kumara
Dharmaratne on 16 February 1998.
