(RSF/IFEX) – Victor Rolando Arroyo, a correspondent with the agency Union de Periodistas y Escritores Cuba Independientes (UPECI) in Pinar del Río, was released on 19 July 2000, after serving his six-month prison sentence.
Arrested on 14 January, he was sentenced for “monopolising toys”. The authorities accused the journalist of having bought a large quantity of toys to redistribute to underprivileged children in the province of Pinar del Río, as part of a campaign backed by the Cuban community in Miami.
