(CJES/IFEX) – Reporters from several Russian and foreign publications were beaten and detained in Nizhny Novgorod while covering the March of Dissent, organised by the joint opposition on 24 March 2007. Media reports say 12 to 20 journalists were exposed to violence.
According to information filed by CJES correspondents on 26 March, nine journalists were detained, namely Arkady Babchenko, a correspondent for Moscow-based “Novaya Gazeta”; Remko Reiding, a correspondent for the Dutch Press Association; Mikhail Beznosov, a photographer for Nizhny Novgorod-based “Novoye Delo”; Roman Mukhametjanov, a photographer for Moscow-based “Moskovskiye Novosti”; Andrei Nikolsky, a photographer for the Moscow-based weekly “Ogonyok”; Yevgeny Lavlinsky, editor-in-chief of the Nizhny Novgorod newspaper “Gorod I Gorozhane”; Ivan Sekretaryov, photographer for the Associated Press; Denis Sinyakov, photographer for Reuters; and Joseph Sywenkyj, a photographer for “The New York Times”.
In addition, according to information received by CJES, three journalists were beaten, namely Remko Reiding of the Dutch Press Association, Ivan Sekretaryov of the Associated Press, and Denis Sinyakov of Reuters.
CJES is continuing investigations to identify the names of other journalists who became targets of attacks during the march.
