(IPYS/IFEX) – On the night of 17 April 2007, unidentified persons threw a hand grenade against the headquarters of the newspaper “Cambio”, in the town of Hermosillo, state of Sonora, in northern Mexico.
According to the newspaper, the grenade exploded in the administrative area of the building, which was empty at the time. There was only material damage. The motives for the attack have not been determined.
According to preliminary investigations, the grenade is similar to the ones that were thrown on 15 April against the headquarters of the Public Security State Police in that same town.
The attack took place a day after the kidnapping of journalist Saúl Martínez Ortega, editor of the newspaper “Diario de Agua Prieta”, which also took place in Sonora, outside the public security offices of the town of Agua Prieta (see IFEX alert of 17 April 2007).
Sonora is one of the northern states of Mexico where drug traffickers have repeatedly attacked media and journalists.
