(IPYS/IFEX) – On 8 May 2007, photographers Gil Montaño, of the newspaper “El Universal”, and David Urdaneta, of the newspaper “El Meridiano”, were assaulted by members of the military police as they attempted to cover an incident involving spectators of a football game being played at the Brigido Iriarte Stadium in central Caracas.
The fans broke through the stadium’s security systems and invaded the field at the end of the game. The police assaulted the journalists to prevent them from taking pictures of the way they were dealing with one of the fans.
Three policemen held Montaño from behind to stop him from covering the event. They damaged two of his camera’s lenses. Urdaneta was hit by another policeman.
