(IPYS/IFEX) – In July 2007 state employees repeatedly restricted Globovisión reporters from accessing official venues to cover events. Globovisión is a media outlet that is critical of the government.
The first incident took place on 3 July, when the chief of security at the Ministry of Civic Power for Civic Participation and Social Development (Ministerio de Poder Popular para la Participación Popular y el Desarrollo Social, MINPADES) prevented journalist Wilmer Solano from entering the ministry’s headquarters. The journalist wished to obtain the testimony of management after a group of workers were fired.
On 10 and 11 July, Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA) security personnel prevented reporters María Valentina Portilla and María Gutierrez, correspondents for Globovisión in the state of Zulia, from entering the company’s premises. They were planning to report on the PDVSA president’s statements and protests by the company’s workers.
Finally, on 26 July, Globovisión was the only television station not invited to a press conference organised by Minister for Telecommunications and Information Technology Jesse Chacón, which was attended by the rest of the media.
IPYS wishes to express its concern vis-à-vis the constant restrictions against Globovisión reporters.
