(NUSOJ/IFEX) – The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) strongly condemns the arrest of journalist Idle Moallim in Bossasso on 5 January 2008 by the police force of Puntland Regional State.
Idle Moallim, a freelance journalist, was arrested when the Puntland police asked him several times where he came from and what reports he had prepared about human trafficking of people travelling from Bossasso to the Gulf by boat. He is currently detained in the central detention centre of Bossasso.
“We condemn the detention of Mr Idle Moallim and demand his immediate release,” said Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ Secretary General. “Intimidating journalists for reporting on issues of public importance like human trafficking is absurd.”
