(RSF/IFEX) – RSF is very concerned by reports that several people were
sentenced to prison for publishing “politically illegal” items.
On 29 and 30 December 1998, reports by Agence France-Presse (AFP) and
Associated Press (AP) explained that Chinese authorities had sentenced at
least 18 people to up to 13 years in prison for “printing or selling illegal
publications.” A man by the name of Wang Suozho was jailed for publishing
more than fifteen thousand “politically illegal” items between October 1997
and April 1998. According to an official daily in Beijing, a total of 2,800
people have been detained and 190 sentenced during the campaign against
illegal books and magazines.
