As authorities escalate their crackdown on human rights defenders and civil society organisations, rights groups call for the immediate release of detained members of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR), and an end to the persecution of Egyptian civil society.

Civil society organizations condemn the escalated targeting of human rights workers in the country after authorities arrested several members of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) in retaliation for meeting with senior Western diplomats, and call for the immediate release of EIPR’s director, Gasser Abdel Razek and his colleagues who face punitive treatment in detention.

The undersigned organizations condemn the Egyptian authorities’ blocking of at least 600 websites since May 2017, and the use of vaguely worded laws to legalize the blocking in contradiction of international treaties.
