(IPYS/IFEX) – On 2 April 2007, José Atauje, a reporter for television station Canal 4, was assaulted by Max Torre, president of the social welfare society of Ayacucho (Beneficencia Pública de Ayacucho), a region in the country’s south. Torre punched Atauje in the face to prevent him from covering the detention of his nephew at the local police station for creating a disturbance and resisting arrest. The incident took place in the city of Ayacucho.
The assailant is the brother of Judge Francisco Torre, whose son was also detained by the local police.
