A mysterious fire has gutted the studios of the ELWA radio station in Paynesville, outside Monrovia.
(CEMESP/IFEX) – Following the November 8, 2011 closure of four broadcasting houses, viewed by the government as pro-opposition, a mysterious fire has gutted the studios of the ELWA radio station in Paynesville, outside Monrovia. Sources say the inferno occurred at night.
It has not been determined what caused the fire but there have been a number of suspicious petrol bombing incidents in Monrovia over the past couple of weeks, which are thought to be politically motivated.
Many believe the attack on ELWA is not politically motivated as the station is not politically aligned. But at least one staff member, who preferred to remain anonymous, insisted that there was a conspiracy to burn down the station.
The government of Liberia and the ELWA station management have been battling over the land the radio station is on, which the government is trying to reclaim.
Police say they are investigating the incident.
