(IPYS/IFEX) – On 22 March 2007, two men on a motorbike threw a teargas canister against the front of the house of journalist Hermes Rivera, current public relations representative of the municipality of Cajaruro in Bagua Grande, region of Amazonas in northeastern Peru.
Rivera told IPYS that the attack was preceded by a series of threats sent to his mobile phone as text messages, starting on 18 March. The threats demanded that the journalist stop commenting on the case of Miguel Pérez Julca, a journalist who was murdered in Jaén on 17 March (see IFEX alert of 20 March 2007).
Rivera has been interviewed by several media outlets in Amazonas because of his friendship with Pérez Julca.
A complaint has been filed at the Bagua Grande police station. Rivera has asked the local government for protection.
