The Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) is seeking nominations for a new award that honours journalists or organisations that have made a notable contribution to the defence and promotion of press freedom in Pakistan.

The Aslam Ali Press Freedom Award is named after the former founding trustee of PPF, who was listed in 2000 as one of 50 world press freedom heroes by the International Press Institute. Underwritten by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the annual award carries a cash prize of 100,000 rupees (US$ 1,700).

Individuals and organisations working in the field of media and human rights can nominate themselves or other candidates for the award. The winner of the inaugural award will be announced on 3 May, World Press Freedom Day.

A jury will comprise six eminent journalists, academics and human rights experts. Three members of the jury will be nominated by PPF and three by UNESCO Islamabad.

The deadline for submitting nominations is 15 April 2006.
