Mohammed Ould Abdel Latif, a reporter with the privately-owned "El Hayat", was arrested while interviewing traders about the police's alleged involvement in tax collection.
(MFWA/IFEX) – Mohammed Ould Abdel Latif, a reporter of privately-owned “El Hayat”, an Arabic-language daily newspaper, was detained on 18 July 2010 by the Mauritanian police for several hours before being released without charge.
The Media Foundation for West Africa’s (MFWA) correspondent in Mauritania reported that Latif’s arrest was a result of his investigations into tax collection by the Arafat Municipal Authorities in Nouakchott, the capital. He was arrested while interviewing traders in the municipality about the alleged involvement of the police in tax collection.
The correspondent said the police accused the reporter of disobeying their orders.
