(IPYS/IFEX) – On 7 May 2007, journalist Sandra Hernández Acosta, head of Public Relations for the Municipality of Maicao, was assaulted by the vice-president of the Municipal Council of that same municipality, Sayira García Ariza.
The assailant burst into the premises of radio Olímpica Estéreo as Hernández was broadcasting the institutional programme “Gestión con Resultados”. García took the microphone from the journalist and hit her while on-air. The event took place in the department of Guajira, northern Colombia.
According to the journalist, the assault was in response to a criticism she had just broadcast of the Council’s decision to forbid holding the wake of a murdered notary on its premises.
