(IPYS/IFEX) – On 7 February 2007, ruling party National Assembly member Berkis Solís stopped journalist Paola Lessey from completing an interview with a representative of the Regional Medical Doctors’ Association, Mirlenys Sánchez, when she was asking the latter about accusations of unpaid salaries and damages to the infrastructure of the Guaiparo Hospital in Ciudad Guayana, in south-eastern Venezuela.
The journalist, who works for the newspaper “Correo del Caroní”, told IPYS that she was interviewing Dr. Sánchez during a tour of the hospital which took place with several National Assembly members in tow, when Solís, realizing that Lessey was asking about the hospital’s problems, grabbed the journalist by the shoulder to pull her away from the doctor. She then insulted her, saying that the intention of her interview was to run down the government.
