(GDF/IFEX) – On 4 October 2000, Furat Valeev, the editor-in-chief of daily “Vetchernij Neftekamsk” (in the Republic of Bashkortostan), was sentenced to ten days imprisonment for “disrespecting the court” and jailed in Neftekamsk Town Prison.
In May, Valeev published an article in which he drew attention to corruption in the Republic of Bashkortostan. The authorities he pointed to brought an action against him at the Neftekamsk Town Court. Valeev allegedly never received the court’s notice, and therefore did not show up for the sitting.
On 4 October, two military officers came to the offices of “Vetchernij Neftekamsk”, and took Valeev to the court, where Judge Lilja Akhtiamova sentenced him to ten days in prison.
