Cambodian court upholds conviction of 11 land rights activists

Following an appeal hearing that was characterised by an almost total absence of fair trial rights, a Cambodian court upheld the wrongful convictions and sentences originally imposed on 10 land activists and one monk.

In a series of recent arrests and unfair trials, the Cambodian judiciary has been used to repress human rights defenders rather than protect citizens’ rights. Political interference and judicial harassment are deeply rooted in Cambodia, and were further entrenched earlier this year with the passing of three laws that increased executive control of the judiciary.

Cambodian civil society groups condemn arrest and conviction of protesters

Seven representatives of Cambodia’s Boeung Kak Lake community were sentenced to one year in prison and a US$500 fine each after protesting over alleged deliberate drainage problems. Their arrest “is extremely worrying, especially when taking into account the fact that five of them were previously jailed for peaceful activism.”

Rights group launches campaign calling on Cambodians to take a stance against impunity

CCHR’s campaign calls on people to take a photo of themselves holding a sign that calls for an end to impunity. These photos will be collected throughout November, collated into a giant petition poster and delivered to the Ministry of Justice.
