The government has declared its commitment to the right to freedom of information; however, the right to access information, the availability of information, and demand for information are far from entrenched in Cambodian society.

Pressure from the authorities led to the severe disruption of four workshops, while a demonstration by garment factory workers was violently repressed earlier in the week.

Police chief Touch Naruth also denied claims that his officers had beaten three female garment factory workers with batons and shields during a protest on 27 March.

This case points to the pervasive impunity in Banteay Meanchey province and throughout the country, CCHR notes.
