Argentinian journalist detained at Venezuelan airport

The temporary detention of Argentine journalist Jorge Lanata at the Caracas, Venezuela, airport and the seizure of his reporter’s materials was protested today by the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), which called on the South American country’s authorities to show full tolerance for the unfettered exercise of press freedom.

The First Court of Justice ratified a 2009 sentence imposed by a lower court on the news company Editora Panamá América and reporters Jean Marcel Chéry and Gustavo Aparicio in a civil lawsuit claiming “damage to reputation” filed by Winston Spadafora, who was also a Supreme Court justice.

The Criminal Chamber of the Colombian Supreme Court announced that it would not pursue criminal defamation charges against a journalist who had written opinion columns critical of the Court.
