The students threatened to retaliate against Ángel Montenegro Guanilo if he continued criticising the university students' actions.
(IPYS/IFEX) – On 15 June 2011, journalist Ángel Montenegro Guanilo, host of the Line TV program “Hora 25”, was attacked and threatened by three students of the Universidad Privada del Norte’s law faculty, based in Cajamarca, northeastern Peru.
Montenegro told IPYS that he was leaving the university campus, where he is also a student, when he was chased by the assailants who led him to a deserted area. The students berated him for having criticized another group of university students who, during the electoral campaign, climbed onto the fountain in Cajamarca’s Main Square to protest against Keiko Fujimori, who had come to the city to hold a political meeting.
The students threatened to retaliate against Montenegro if he continued criticizing them. They only stopped hitting him when they noticed the journalist was recording the assault with his cell phone. The assailants were identified as Ricardo León Aguilar, Hugo Gonzáles Rengifo and Alan Bustamante Medina.
IPYS condemns the attack against Montenegro and urges Cajamarca’s government to provide the journalist with protection.
