The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) has released a report dealing with the widespread phenomenon of self-censorship among Palestinian journalists and media outlets, and examining its impact.
This report was realized in the framework of a campaign that MADA is running to curb self-censorship. Recently, the center has also published a study showing that 80% of interviewed journalists practice self-censorship in their work.
MADA’s General Director Musa Rimawi pointed out that the spread of self-censorship seriously impacts the quality of Palestinian journalism, in addition to hampering freedom of expression and citizens’ right to information. He explained that self-censorship obstructs the role that journalism must play in a democratic society.
Rimawi added that this campaign is part of a series of activities that MADA is implementing to limit self-censorship and increase the level of professionalism among Palestinian journalists.
