(RSF/IFEX) – On 15 April 2009, journalist Andrés Rojas resigned as editor-in-chief of Canal 57 Virgen de Copacabana, a television station based in the La Paz suburb of El Alto. Rojas resigned after receiving many death threats in telephone calls. The Regional Workers’ Confederation (Central Obrera Regional, COR) had “blacklisted” him several weeks earlier for showing “little consideration for the city’s inhabitants.”
In a separate case, Carlos Morales, the editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper “La Prensa”, and another of the newspaper’s editors, Raphael Ramirez, received death threats on 14 April in connection with a story linking a government official to organised gangs.
Reporters Without Borders joins the La Paz-based National Association of Journalists and all other journalists’ unions in condemning the wave of threats against media personnel.
