The Public Prosecutor's Office has launched a legal action against Héctor Camero Haro, a member of the Tierra y Libertad community radio station.
(AMARC/IFEX) – The Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched a legal action against Héctor Camero Haro, a member of the Tierra y Libertad community radio station, based in Monterrey, Nuevo León. His lawyer has appealed against the warrant for Camero Haro’s arrest.
The case comes on the heels of an investigation launched following a complaint by the Interior Secretary, under the General Law on National Assets (Ley General de Bienes Nacionales) which stipulates a punishment of up to 12 years in prison.
According to a March 2009 statement signed by AMARC-Mexico, ARTICLE 19 and other freedom of expression and communication organisations, “the Tierra y Libertad community set up a radio station that operated for seven years and provided information on services, human rights, legal aid, public health and other matters.”
Beginning in 2002, the radio station approached the Communications and Transportation Secretariat in order to obtain a formal operating permit. However, the station was not successful and in 2008, more than 120 Federal Preventive Police officers stormed the station and shut it down.
