Three masked men damaged the Radio América transmitters located in Olanchito, Yoro department.
(C-Libre/IFEX) – According to the directors of Radio América, on 1 September 2009, three masked men damaged the radio station’s transmitters located in Olanchito, in the department of Yoro.
“We still do not have any details about the level of damage to the transmitters ( . . . ) We just know that they assaulted the security guard and burned his clothing and that we are not able to broadcast in the Olanchito area,” Abel García, one of the radio station’s directors, said.
García noted that this is the fourth attack on the media outlet. The transmitters in Olanchito were attacked on two previous occasions and another attack took place in Marcala, in the department of La Paz.
The station’s director of news programming, Luis Edgardo Vallejo, said, “They are creating tension by damaging equipment and intimidating journalists.” He also expressed disappointment in the fact that the National Police have not released any information on the results of their assessment of an explosive that was thrown at the station on 30 June.
In a separate case, the head of Radio Globo, David Romero, said during a broadcast that his radio station continues to be targeted by way of interference in the transmission of the station’s signal via repeaters in the departments of Comayagua, Santa Bárbara and Choluteca.
