The report highlights cases where the work of journalists covering political campaigns and rallies was affected.
(FLIP/IFEX) – Since 16 March 2010, when the official results of the legislative elections were counted, until 20 June, when the second round of the presidential elections occured, FLIP monitored the press freedom situation in Colombia during the presidential electoral process.
This report highlights cases where the work of journalists covering political campaigns and rallies, as well as the first and second round election days (30 March and 20 June, respectively), was affected. FLIP based this information on reports by journalists received via the Network for the Protection of Journalists (Red de Alerta y Protección a Periodistas), which is made up of 29 correspondents from all over the country.
It is important to keep in mind that the informative work of journalists, within the framework of the electoral process, is a vital tool for monitoring the transparency of elections. It is not acceptable to allow any type of intimidation against reporters, nor arbitrary limits on their work when they are attempting to access information that is of interest to the general public, says FLIP.
