Rodrigo Santos was assaulted by Delfim Peixoto Neto, an advisor to the president of the Catarinense Football Association
(IPYS/IFEX) – On 10 July 2010, Rodrigo Santos, a reporter for Radio Cidade radio station, was assaulted by Delfim Peixoto Neto, an advisor to the president of the Catarinense Football Association. The incident took place at the end of a football match in Joinville, southern Brasil.
According to Santos, Neto burst into the press booth and started to hit and kick him. The journalist suffered a broken nose and lost consciousness for a few minutes. He was admitted to hospital for treatment.
The following day Santos filed a complaint against Neto at the local police station. He suspects he was beaten in retaliation for an entry on his blog.
The football association condemned the assault and said that legal action will be initiated against Neto.
IPYS and the National Journalists, Association (ANJ) condemn the assault on the journalist and await the results of an investigation into Neto’s actions.
