Governor Adán Chávez accused the daily of lying and distorting information.
(IPYS-Venezuela/IFEX) – On 24 August 2010, Adán Chávez, the governor of the state of Barinas, in western Venezuela, repeated his attacks against the newspaper “La Prensa”, accusing it of distorting information and lying.
Chávez, in his role as head of the Bolívar Campaign in Barinas, called a press conference to discuss the 26 September parliamentary elections. During the press conference the governor denounced “La Prensa”, stating that the newspaper “is not the only one, but it is the main opposition media outlet in the state of Barinas where information is distorted, and lies, stupidities and manipulations are published.”
Chávez said, “To those who still read this print media outlet, beware, especially indifferent and indecisive fellow countrymen. They should not allow themselves to be dragged along by this media war. I am increasingly convinced that this newspaper will lose more readers and I’m saying this responsibly, it will just be more of the same if they state I am attacking the media”.
The governor warned that he will provide evidence of “all the nonsense, lies and set-ups published by ‘La Prensa’ to destabilize and discredit the government administration, even publishing old photographs on many occasions.”
IPYS-Venezuela condemns these accusations, which have a political basis and show a lack of respect for the freedom of expression of media outlets that oppose the government.
