IAPA members reviewed the press freedom situation country-by-country during the organisation's annual meeting.
(IAPA/IFEX) – Miami, November 10, 2010 – With more than 500 representatives from the media in the Americas participating, between November 5th and 9th the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) reviewed the performance of press freedom country-by-country during its annual meeting held in Merida, Mexico. Official documents from this meeting – 25 reports, 22 resolutions and conclusions – are available in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
As emphasized in the Assembly’s conclusions, the most intense discussions on issues of press freedom in the hemisphere took place “with regard to Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Nicaragua and Argentina, where governments are turning to anti-democratic tactics to suppress the independent media and place the flow of information and news in the hands of state-controlled media”.
