Unidentified assailants took "Correio Mariliense"'s main computer and set fire to parts of the building.
(IPYS/IFEX) – On 1 November 2010, unidentified individuals attacked the printing press of “Correio Mariliense” newspaper, in the state of Sao Paulo, southeastern Brazil. The assailants took the main computer, thus interrupting the paper’s printing process. They also provoked a short-circuit in the electricity system and set fire to different parts of the building. There were no casualties.
The newspaper believes the attack was aimed at interfering with the media outlet’s work. It now has to be printed elsewhere. According to an estimate by the paper, the incident will cost them approximately US$30,000.
The local police inspector, Marcos Mourão, called for promptness in the investigation which is being carried out by a police department that specialises in crimes against the press.
The Brazilian Association of Radio and TV stations (Abert) and the National Newspapers Association (ANJ) condemned the attack.
