(OLA/IFEX) – On 24 August 2011, journalist Humberto Millán Salazar, the editor of the online daily “A Discusión” and a news host for the Radio Fórmula radio station, was kidnapped by heavily armed men.
The kidnapping took place early in the morning as Millán Salazar was leaving the “A Discusión” offices in the Canaco neighbourhood of Culiacán, in Sinaloa state. The armed men, who were carrying both rifles and handguns, got out of two vehicles that had parked in front of the office. They forced the journalist into one of the vehicles and drove off, taking Millán Salazar’s vehicle with them. The journalist’s brother was with him at the time of the incident and reported the kidnapping to the Sinaloa Public Prosecutor’s Office, which has opened a preliminary investigation in the case. Officers assigned to the investigation are trying to determine Millán Salazar’s whereabouts as well as the motive behind the kidnapping.
In the opinion column that Millán Salazar writes for “A Discusión”, he covers political issues and has denounced the actions of public officials at both the local and national levels. As a result of his reporting he has received death threats. “A Discusión” stopped publishing a print version less than two years ago, in a move that may have been linked to differences between the media outlet and former governor Jesús Aguilar Padilla.
