Robert Jennier Carrasco Huamán, a reporter for "Habla el Pueblo", was seriously injured after he was shot in the back by two men on a motorcycle.
(OLA/IFEX) – 21 November 2011 – Reporter Robert Jennier Carrasco Huamán, who works for the programme “Habla el Pueblo” (“The People Speak”) that airs on Radio Lorito in Cajamarca province, was shot and injured on 23 October 2011.
The reporter was outside a nightclub with three friends when two people riding a black motorcycle approached him. When the motorcycle was about four metres away, the passenger shot him once. The bullet hit him in the back, near his lungs. He was seriously injured and taken to the hospital in the city of Jaén, where doctors saved his life.
Several days before the attack, the reporter received death threats. A text message sent to his cellphone read: (. . .) we are going to shut you up, we are going to kill you”.
The reporter, who is still recovering, told OLA that he fears for his life and for his family, but he intends to continue his journalism.
María Chacón Villanueva, the director of the programme “Habla el Pueblo”, said she was concerned about the shooting. She assumes it is connected to Carrasco Huamán’s reporting. Several weeks ago, her programme recently aired a news report about a 13-year-old girl who died at a nightclub, which led to the nightclub being shut down. The threats against Chacón Villanueva and other reporters started shortly after.
Before the attack, Carrasco Huamán also reported on a brick factory that was polluting the environment.
Chacón Villanueva also said that the police have not investigated the shooting.
