Journalist Bequer Bejarano Valdivia, director of Channel 35 program Alerta, reported to the governor of Huánuco that he has received death threats from an alderman in the municipality, Clever Zevallos Fretel.
(IPYS/IFEX) – On 2 May 2012, journalist Bequer Bejarano Valdivia, director of Channel 35 program Alerta, reported to the governor of Huánuco that he has received death threats from an alderman in the municipality, Clever Zevallos Fretel.
According to the accusation, Zevallos Fretel threatened the journalist on 1 May while he was broadcasting a football match live from the local sports grounds. The alderman approached the journalist through the windows of the cabins reserved for the press and also insulted him.
The journalist has criticized Zevallos Fretel’s work in the past.
Because the journalist is also a spokesman for the regional president, Luis Picón Quevedo, it was thought that the conflict with Zevallos Fretel could have been an extension of the rivalry between the region’s highest authority and the provincial mayor of Huánuco, Jesús Giles Alipazaga, to whom Zevallos Fretel is close. This, however, has been refuted by Bejarano Valdivia.
The journalist, who is also the editor of the magazine Hit & Business, Revista de Negocios Exitosos, stated that State Security is investigating the accusation and that he has been summoned to make a statement.
