(FLIP/IFEX) – Early in the morning of Monday 16 July 2001, community leader and local communicator Eduardo Estrada Gutierrez was assassinated in the municipality of San Pablo, in the Bolívar department.
Estrada Gutierrez was the president of the Association for the Development of Communications and Culture in San Pablo (Asociacion para el Desarrollo de la Comunicacion y la Cultura de San Pablo, ADECOSAN), a community organisation affiliated with the Magdalena Medio Network of Community Radio Stations (Asociacion Red de Emisoras Comunitarias del Magdalena Medio, AREDMAG), and was working on the implementation of a community radio station in the municipality.
Last year, José Duber Tello, a member of ADECOSAN, was assassinated.
Such incidents are an attack on communications at the community level that have been developing for more than three years with the support of such organisations as Ecopetrol, the Magdalena Medio Programme for Development and Peace (Programa de Desarrollo y Paz del Magdalena Medio), the Barrancabermeja diocese, the Ministries of Culture and Communications, mayors’ offices and communications networks made up of media empowered to represent communities in more than thirteen municipalities in the region.
FLIP asked members of the national government and the authorities in general to put into place processes that will protect Colombian journalists’ fundamental right to life and freedom of expression.
