(IFJ/IFEX) – On 19 April 2001, the weekly publication “El Otro”, from Nariño, was attacked with explosives in Pasto City.
The weekly publication “Voz” reported in their latest edition that the attack occurred when two grenades were thrown inside the “El Otro” headquarters, destroying part of the building and also badly damaging neighbouring houses.
“El Otro” is distributed on Mondays and has a print run of 3,000 copies. Publication Director Ricardo Romero told “Voz” that, “journalists and the director of this weekly publication had not received threats, but described the terrorist act as retaliation against important allegations made in the newspaper.”
Romero was reinstated into society after having been a member of the former subversive group, Movimiento 19 de abril (M-19).
He declared that, “they would sue the state for lack of protection of the weekly publication. The damages to the publication’s headquarters have been initially estimated at 10 million pesos (US$ 5,000).”
