Nathaly Toledo, a journalist and newscaster for TV station Teleamazonas, reported via Twitter that she received death threats after presenting a report on drugs and weapons found in a school in the coastal city of Guayaquil and their links to gangs.
(Fundamedios/IFEX) – On Tuesday 23 October 2012, Nathaly Toledo, a journalist and newscaster for TV station Teleamazonas, reported via Twitter that she received death threats after presenting a report on drugs and weapons found in a school in the coastal city of Guayaquil and their links to gangs.
Using her account, @nathalytoledo, the journalist said “After the report about drugs and weapons I received death threats. I am making this public because I WON’T be intimidated! Informing is my job”.
Toledo told Fundamedios that everything happened the few minutes after the report was broadcast by the Teleamazonas news program, in which she revealed the links between the existence of drugs and weapons and the city’s gangs.
“I received a few calls from an unknown number and because they insisted so much I eventually decided to answer my cellphone. When I did I could hear our news program in the background and then a person between 30 and 45 years old insulted me very calmly and coldly in every possible way and finally told me that I had overstepped and that I should pay for it, so that he would kill me. I ended the call but he phoned again and told me that he knows where I live”, said Toledo.
Toledo has filed a formal complaint with the Prosecutor’s Office and has been granted protection.
