On 21 August 2013, a team of Canal N reporters from Lima were attacked by a group of coffee farmers who were protesting violently against the government by blocking the Central Highway. This took place in La Oroya, in central Peru.
Journalist Lourdes Páucar and camera operator Fabry Rivera were covering the protest when they were attacked, kicked and punched by the demonstrators who also took their equipment and destroyed it.
Rivera suffered the worst injuries and had to be transferred by the police to a health clinic for treatment. The camera operator is no longer in critical condition.
The camera with which they were covering the events was stripped of its battery and its lens was completely destroyed. In addition, Canal N’s wireless microphone system was taken by the attackers.
IPYS condemns these violent acts against Canal N’s journalists who were just doing their jobs and demands that the farmers association should sanction those who were responsible for this reprehensible beating.
