The weekly "Hildebrandt en sus trece" obtained information from a Peruvian Army intelligence officer, confirming that two of its reporters were being tracked by the government.
On October 23, 2015, journalist César Hildebrandt, editor of the weekly “Hildebrandt en sus trece”, reported that he and his managing editor, Rebeca Diz, had been subjected to illegal surveillance by the government of Ollanta Humala. The incident occurred in Lima, the capital.
Asked by IPYS, Diz reported that a few weeks ago, as she and Hildebrandt were leaving a restaurant, they realized that two men were taking pictures of them from an old car parked at a corner.
Days later, as Diz was arriving home, she saw a car with an unknown subject who was waiting at the entrance suspiciously. This week, the weekly obtained information from a Peruvian Army intelligence officer, who produced a document confirming that both reporters were being tracked by the government.
The weekly has published several investigative reports involving President Humala and his wife, as well as public officials.
It was reported this year that the National Intelligence Directorate (DINI) prepared files on politicians, businessmen and opposition journalists, and conducted surveillance operations. One of the journalists spied on was César Hildebrandt.
IPYS calls the attention of Peruvian authorities about these events and considers them a blatant attack on freedom of expression and against the right to have access to relevant information of public interest.
