Support PEN International’s call for appeals to Mexican and Veracruz State authorities to take action to ensure author and journalist Noe Zavaleta’s safety. Tell Mexican authorities that Noe Zavaleta needs protection now by tweeting using the action box above.
Zavaleta, who has reportedly fled Veracruz due to fears for his safety, was subject to threats and intimidation during the lead up to the release of his book “Javier Duarte’s Hell.” The book highlights the six years of the State Governor’s administration as being plagued with corruption and violence. Since Mr. Duarte took up office in 2010, 17 journalists have been killed in Veracruz, making it the most dangerous state for journalists in Mexico.
According to the Mexican magazine Proceso, where Zavaleta is a regular contributor, he has received threats from businessman and owner of the Veracruz-based newspaper El Buen Tono, Jose Abella for including accusations in his recently released book of questionable advertising contracts between the newspaper and Governor Duarte. Mr. Abella reportedly sent Zavaleta tweets that included threatening claims such as ‘I know where you live.’ Mr. Zavaleta has also reported threats from government email accounts.
