Journalist Alberto Ramos Romero, director of the Radio Ancash news programme in the city of Huaraz, was forced to resign by the stationâs owners, after his 26 March 2000 critiques of Alberto Fujimoriâs government and the management of Member of Congress MarÃa Espinoza Mattos and other officials.
Ramos stated that the pressure began months ago and had culminated in the last few days.
During the first two weeks of March, a number of other journalists, including Robin Hood Ipanaque of Radio Vision AlegrÃa, Edgar Palma Huerta, the director of the bi-monthly “La Jornada”, and Gerardo Rocha Chocos, head of the Radio Huascarán news programme, were subjected to similar treatment (see IFEX alert of 17 March 2000).
These accusations were made known to Hugo Gonzales, president of the Huaraz branch of the Peruvian National Association of Journalists of Peru (Asociacion Nacional de Periodistas de Perú, ANP), who has since been receiving death threats over the telephone.
