(IPYS/IFEX) – The National Police’s Criminal Investigations Division (División de Criminalística, DIVINCRI) in Huaraz has issued an arrest warrant for David Moisés Julca Orrillo, the second individual alleged to be responsible for the 14 February 2004 murder of Radio Órbita journalist Antonio De La Torre in the city of Yungay.
The Ancash department’s DIVINCRI said the 28-year-old suspect is originally from Chimbote and is alleged to be the boyfriend of Emma León, the daughter of Yungay’s mayor, Amaro León. Amaro León is currently in prison, accused of being the mastermind behind the journalist’s murder.
According to the Huaraz police’s investigations, it appears that the mayor paid Julca Orrillo a large sum of money to assassinate the journalist. The agreement also allegedly included a monthly “living allowance”. Commander Dagoberto Rimac Durand said that an arrest warrant has also been issued for the mayor’s daughter.
Julca Orrillo was identified when, on 25 March, he went to the mayor’s house to demand payment from the mayor’s daughter. When he failed to obtain the money, Julca Orrillo reportedly attacked Emma León. Neighbours informed the Yungay police of the incident, but the suspects had fled by the time police arrived.
