(IPYS/IFEX) – On the night of 4 January 2005, journalist , a broadcaster and director of Radio Visión Global station’s “Tribuna Libre” programme, was assaulted by Henry Pulido Gómez, an engineer for the Servicios Generales Sosa construction company. Pulido also threatened Tenazoa with death.
The incident occurred at about 9:00 p.m. (local time), in the Padre Abad district of the city of Pucallpa, Ucayali region, southeastern Peru.
The assault is linked to a 30 December 2004 broadcast of Tenazoa’s radio programme in which a group of workers from the company Pulido Gómez represents accused him of failing to pay salaries and breaching contracts with the employees who work at a particular property.
On the evening of 4 January, Tenazoa was leaving a meeting when Pulido Gómez, who was waiting for the journalist in the street, asked if he could talk with him. Pulido Gómez then yelled at him, blaming Tenazoa for the accusations. When Tenazoa attempted to defend his actions, Pulido Gómez grabbed him by the neck, knocked him to the ground and kicked him in the stomach, legs, back and shoulders, while threatening to kill him. Only after local residents and Tenazoa’s friends came out to help, did Pulido Gómez stop.
Tenazoa was taken to the local health centre for treatment. He subsequently filed a complaint against Pulido Gómez at the Padre Abad police station. On the morning of 5 January, Tenazoa submitted a request for protection to the local subprefecture.
