(FLIP/IFEX) – In a 24 February 2005 press release, the Manuel Cepeda Vargas Urban Unit of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia, FARC) claimed responsibility for a recent attack on the RCN Radio and Television building in Cali. The guerrilla group accused RCN of “taking sides in the war”, in favour of the government and the army.
On 20 February, at 10:15 p.m. (local time), a car bomb exploded in front of the RCN building in Cali. Seventy percent of the building was destroyed. Ricardo Luna, a Radio Calidad sound engineer, and Jaime Alberto Martínez, an RCN security guard, were injured in the blast. They were taken to hospital for treatment and subsequently discharged.
Once again, FLIP condemns the attack on RCN Radio and Television, maintaiing that under no circumstances should a media outlet be attacked. The organisation considers the car bomb explosion to be an attack on press freedom.
